Coming back from a trip that brought me twice around the world in 14 months, through 35 countries and territories and through all climate zones, you definitely need camera equipment that is sturdy, reliable and lightweight enough to carry to the most remote places. I am consistently asked what kind of gear I take on these trips, and if I am a Nikon or Canon user. In my opinion, it doesn’t really matter what brand you have as long as you are happy with the results.

I took hundreds of thousands of photos with Nikon, but am sure if I had used Canon I would have been happy with them as well. Gear gets upgraded when the need arises so this list changes periodically, but the core elements remain the same. Different jobs dictate the need for different gear, but this is what camera equipment I always take with me. Especially into very remote locations where you have to travel light, and with airline luggage requirements you need to limit yourself.

Multimedia:

I prefer to use a Windows system when traveling because it’s more compatible overall when going into the more remote parts of the world. Although many photographers use Apple, I found that the closed approach is limiting when you need to transfer files to a Windows hard drive, your battery dies or you need to communicate with another computer.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad 520 with extra battery pack
  • Vosonic external hard drive with 320 Gig
  • 3x WD 1 TB external hard drives
  • Adobe Lightroom 5.5
